Snippets From Jeff DeGraff At LedX

I had the opportunity to hear Jeff DeGraff’s presentation at LedX. His book, The Innovation Code is an excellent read on how people with different work strengths all are needed to come together and create innovation.

These are the snippets I took away from his presentation at this year’s LedX conference.

How We Approach Creativity & Innovation
– Creating is how we transcend the world
– You can’t avoid the failure cycle, you can only accelerate it
– Most diverse cities are the most innovative – why? Diversity creates conflict
– You have to give up something to get innovation – get up every day and fail and keep moving forward
– No one is going to save you, get off your butt
– Intelligent people learn and then adjust their thinking but often we choose a position and get stuck on it
– The feeling of incompleteness pulls us forward
– We are a work in progress – we aspire to wholeness
– Most organizations have an arm to maintain (minimize deviation) and one to grow (must deviate and have conflict)

Different Approaches/Types
– Artists love taking risks and ambiguity. Don’t want to run anything after it is built. They want freedom.
– Engineers are on time, task oriented, love big projects and processes, know all the rules, technical.
– Artists and Engineers are in tension and need to work together so you have something build-able.
– Athletes challenge everything, love to argue, competition, pursue goals, WIN, Move a lot
– Sages build a community, want long term success, socially conscious, connectors

Why We Need This
– Numbers of corporations us gone from 10k to 4K – competition is between federations not companies
– Young people are largely opting out of institutions like marriage and religion
– Need diversity and conflict – worst thing you can do is avoid diversity, second worst thing you can do is compromise rather than going through conflict cycle with the group

Approach
– In what situations do I usually succeed and when do I usually fail?
– Quit trying to do things you aren’t good at, instead be great at what you are good at.
– What am I designed to do?
– Be willing to look at yourself objectively.
– Think of goals as portfolio – don’t buy without selling
– After you delete – figure out what you need to add
– Sometimes the key to innovation is not starting something, it’s stopping things that are tying up capacity to innovate.
– Sages – mentor, coach, collaborate

Setting New Years Goals
– Don’t make a list of goals, write a story about what the end of the year looks like, or a video or a manifesto
– Draw a map of how you get from here to there
– Make a soundtrack for the year
– LEAVE ROOM FOR WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW
